Birding at Santa María del Oro

We visited a lovely crater lake a short distance east of the town of Santa María del Oro in Nayarit.  The area has a lot of sugar cane fields and cattle.

We drove through the former mining town of Santa María del Oro and then to the beautiful slate-blue lake known locally as “La Laguna”.  The depth of the lake is a maximum of 65.5 meters.

Gorgeous trees

We walked along the lake near a small campground and saw quite a few new birds including Black-headed Grosbeak, MacGillivray's Warbler, Audubon's Warbler, Social Flycatcher, Elegant Euphonia.

The RV park was small and trees were too tight and low for a Class A

The water in the lake was very clear.  There is boating and swimming.  It is probably quite busy on the weekend.  There are several resorts and numerous houses and restaurants around the lake.

We returned home in late afternoon.  I was pleased to find visiting family members enjoying a beverage on our patio.  Cam had gone to Puerto Vallarta and brought them here.  Everyone was tired so we decided to go out for dinner tomorrow and called it a day.  Except for bingo of course.  Alas, Dawn and I had to do the walk of shame having finally broken our winning streak.
