April 27th - Saskatoon

We headed out of hoodoo country, down Alberta's lovely paved side roads.  Spotting ducks in potholes.

The lone prairie.

Just outside of Rosetown things started to get a little intense.

and worse

There were cars in the ditch from the previous day and today.

We pulled over in Rosetown for lunch then decided we better keep ahead of the weather.

About 3 km past Rosetown this was the state of things!

Snow Geese

Wait a sec is this Mexico?

We arrived in Saskatoon in mid afternoon.  Glad to have only encountered a small piece of the weather we had been avoiding the past few days.

April 26th - Drumheller, AB

Time to leave Golden ahead of the incoming weather

Highway is open!

Lots of beautiful waterfalls off the rocks along the road.

Perfect travelling day.

Signs of why we chose not to go yesterday

Coming into Banff

Drumheller

We are camped in a nice RV park called Hoodoo RV Resort.  I had mixed feelings today, being sad to leave the green mountains for the brown prairies, but happy to leave behind the $1.31/l gas of Golden for the $1.04/l gas of Alberta.

April 25th - An unexpected stay in Golden BC

Well the best laid plans and all that.  Too much heavy snow falling between us and Drumheller so we decided to stay another day in Golden.

Not good

Sunrise walk along the Kicking Horse river.

It was a mostly sunny and warm day in Golden.  Kirk and I put on a few km along the river walk and into town.

Driving up a forestry road into the hills

We took a ride up to Kicking Horse Ski Resort in the afternoon.

Enjoying the last of the sun before sunset

We met a Dutch couple, travelling in a rental Class C with their pre-school daughter, traversing the Rockies from Calgary to Vancouver.  They had stayed in Banff, Jasper, and spent the last night in Lake Louise, but had awoken to 30 cm of snow.  It was still melting off the roof of their RV in late afternoon.  They were pleased to be on the warm side of the mountains.  We congratulated ourselves on the correctness of our "stay put" call in the morning (aided by a heads up weather call from a concerned friend).

An unexpected but very nice day spent in Golden.
