Palmview, TX

High 33 C Low 13 C

It was a calm foggy morning and we left early to stay ahead of a cold front which like us was headed for the border towns.  We had to use the windshield wipers every time we went over a hill or bridge because moisture would suddenly appear to fog the outside of the windows.  Corpus Christi was its usual industrial self.

Entering Corpus Christi

Hmm they're building a new expressway

Yikes that looks like a ghost house

It was nice to leave the development behind and head out on the quiet divided highway of big ranch country Texas.  We drove by the King Ranch which covers 825,000 acres near Kingsville (of course),
as well as a lot of other huge ranches with massive cement gateways.   It keeps everything nice and peaceful along the highway, I like that.

We arrived in Mission at Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort shortly after noon.  This is a lovely park with lots of trees, flowers, butterflies and birds.  Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is adjacent to this RV park and you can enter it through a small gate.  Lots of birds in this area.  At our site I have seen a Vermillion Flycatcher, Long-billed Thrasher, House Wren, Green Jay and a White-tailed kite.

Lots of butterflies

Monarch hanging on in the strong wind we have here tonight.

Nice! We are going into freeze-up here. Ice is on all the big sloughs and dropping to -10C overnight. Does Palmview mean you are jumping off for MX?

We're a few steps from one of the best birding state parks in Texas, and the World Birding Centre. Nancy has checked out the hog/javalena situation and is now happily hiking about.
