We woke up with fog all around. There were many more truckers than usual at this small Pemex most likely brought to a stop because of visibility issues. Within a half hour it had begun to clear and engines were starting.
We drove the last few hours home through some of the most spectacular scenery we had encountered to date. The vegetation became taller, greener and denser as we neared the fruit jungles of Nayarit. The Autopista Jala Compostela was completed in the last few years. It wasn't long before we felt the warm humid air of the ocean.
Sugar cane
Little towns that previously could only be reached by narrow roads were now exposed. It was amazing whipping along on this gorgeous freeway cutting through some fairly pristine areas with very little access from the freeway itself.
Huge cacti and trees
Puerto Vallarta!
Photos cannot due this justice.
Canyons cloaked by vegetation
Palms became part of the forests
Compostela in the distance
When we reached Compostela it was the end of the freeway. On to the narrow winding descent down Tepic hill to the ocean.
Jungle carved out by semi trucks.
26 km of this
They are widening the road for several miles before La Peñita but traffic was light and we got to the trailer park around 10:00 a.m. We hadn't realized it was Dia de Revolucion!!! Parades were happening in just about every small town including La Peñita. However, we missed it all by being so early and also by not having stopped by Chapala in a campground. Yikes.
