Who are the creatures in the neighbourhood?

This morning I went to feed Chililó and there was already somebody in his bowl!  A food windfall had turned into a dilemma for this small crab when he couldn't get out.  Luckily Kirk was not the first on the scene so I released him into the garden.

Then another unexpected visitor dropped onto our neighbours awning.  It fell from the Mango tree above.  It was a Mexican Vine Snake.  We had one on our patio last year.  This whiplike snake has a very mild venom which would make you feel itchy.

Carlos came, and amidst cries of don't hurt it, he returned it on a rake to the jungle on the other side of the trailer park.

It makes you realize that the jungle around us is teeming with life.  Snakes like boas, vine snakes and rat snakes.  Our neighbour saw a big rat snake sunning on the rock wall last week.  Iguanas, geckos and other varieties of lizards.  Birds of many colors.  Insects, hermit crabs and land crabs.

At the same time as the snake was next door our other neighbour came running over and said the fish were going wild on the beach.  The Crevalle Jacks were chasing hundreds of small silver fish onto the beach.  Brown Pelicans and Magnificent Frigate birds were diving into the fray.  Why does this always have to happen at the same time???  He wanted me to go fishing, I said I had to save the snake!!!

Black-chinned Hummingbird

And at night the Leafcutter ants.
