Our mission today is to visit Jim & Maureen, relatives from Winnipeg who have been wintering in the Palm Springs area for some time. We headed north from our campground to Twentynine Palms, then west on Highway #62 through the Yucca Valley, to the I-10 freeway, then south to Indio, CA. We are still learning about the effect altitude has on temperature. At 4,400 feet, in Jumbo Rocks campground, days were pleasant, around 70 F, but nights were cool, down to 4 F. I was snivelling that I wanted some heat. Indio is 13 feet below sea level, and it was hot! Apparently, they have had a heat wave for the last month.
The park where Jim & Maureen stay has palm trees everywhere, green grass, and flowers, flowers, flowers. Coming out of a week in the high desert, Nancy was in flower heaven. We had a great visit, and chatted about the many advantages of the area, including a great sense of community, direct flights to Winnipeg from Palm Springs Airport 1/2 hour away, and proximity to the large Palm Springs casinos and great concerts, often free! Thanks to Aunty Joan for providing contact information that allowed this visit to happen.
Heading back to camp, we headed east on the I-10, and into the park from the south entrance, completing the loop. I-10 from the park east is a mean highway. The shoulders are littered with exploded tire remnants; and I mean littered; you literally could not take three steps along the shoulder without stepping on tire carcass debris.
